The Safe Food for Growth (SAFEGRO) Project, funded by the Government of Canada, has officially launched two new technical publications: “Manual on Safe and Sustainable Vegetable Farming Practices” and “Manual on Safe and Sustainable Pig Farming Practices”.
Developed through close collaboration between SAFEGRO experts, government regulators, research institutes, agribusinesses, and local authorities, the guides aim to advance Vietnamese agriculture towards greater safety, efficiency, and international integration.
Raising Standards for Vietnam’s Vegetable Sector
Vietnam’s vegetable industry ranks among the top five in Southeast Asia, with over 990,000 hectares under cultivation and an annual output exceeding 19 million tonnes.
To meet domestic and international market demands, the sector must accelerate its transition towards food safety, transparent traceability, environmental protection, and social responsibility.
The Manual on Safe and Sustainable Vegetable Farming Practices offer detailed , step-by-step recommendations, from seed selection, fertilizer use, and plant protection, to cultivation practices, post-harvest handling, and internal quality control. Based on SAFEGRO pilot site experience and best practices from Vietnam and abroad, the guide helps optimize resources, improve economic efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.
Towards Safe, Globally Competitive Pig Farming
Pork accounts for 59–61% of Vietnam’s total meat output, making it one of the country’s 13 key agricultural commodities. The livestock development strategy for 2021–2030 targets 6.0–6.5 million tonnes of pork, with 15–20% for export.
The Manual on Safe and Sustainable Pig Farming Practices present a comprehensive approach, from farm design and planning to implementation and monitoring, applying flexible domestic and international Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) standards, including GLOBALG.A.P, ASEAN GAHP, ThaiGAP, PhilippineGAHP, and PigSAFE (Canada). The guide helps farms increase productivity, ensure biosecurity, guarantee food safety, enhance animal welfare, and expand export market opportunities.
A Roadmap for Transformation
“These two guides are not just technical manuals; they are roadmaps for transformation,” said Mr. Do Thanh Lam, SAFEGRO Project Director. “They will help Vietnam’s vegetable producers and pig farmers meet the strict standards of global markets, while elevating product quality, protecting public health, and fostering sustainable agriculture.”
